This course explains what constitutes a “Form-based Code” (FBC) and why such legal instruments are increasingly important in guiding and controlling the form and content of America’s towns and cities. Course materials clarify the architectural content of FBCs within the framework of planning law. They explain how and why FBCs are different from conventional “use-based” zoning, and they illustrate how FBCs use urban design concepts and techniques to translate the design intentions of different development projects into well-rounded “place-making” strategies for communities.
